Howard Silby


Howard Silby’s career has encompassed a broad range of customer, product, marketing and risk leadership roles in financial services.

He has more than 16 years’ experience in major banks in Australia and the UK, and a further six years in wealth management. Howard led Ubank, a direct banking start-up in Australia, and when he was National Australia Bank’s Chief Marketing Officer, he and his team instigated the famous brand turn around with the “break-up” campaign.

His most recent role before his current BNZ position was as Executive General Manager of Business Lending at NAB.

Howard has deep expertise in data and analytics to drive risk and revenue outcomes and utilising digital innovation and customer-centred design to improve customer experience outcomes.

He completed his undergraduate degrees at Victoria University of Wellington (B.Sc, M.Sc (Maths)), then completed an M.B.A. at the University of Durham.

He served as a Board member on the Risk Management Association of Australia from 2012 – 2015 and as Chairman from 2013 – 2015.

Howard was born in Kaitaia and grew up in Taranaki, where he was dux of New Plymouth Boys High School in 1988.
